How to Start a Home-Based Web Design Business, 3rd (Home-Based Business Series) by Jim Smith.

Success Story: Mike’s Lock & Safe, Inc.

Michael Leach founded Mike’s lock & Safe, Inc. in 1982. After working in a hardware store out of high school he secured a job in a wholesale hardware and locksmith supply warehouse. It was after he moved from California to Oregon to work for a locksmith company he realized it was time to make the move to entrepreneurship.

“I realized I would have to work for myself in order to get anywhere in this field and keep my sanity and make a few dollars for myself,” he said.

Without a business degree he has successfully maintained and operated Mike’s Lock & Safe, Inc., along with his wife, for 25 years.

His business

24-hour locksmith service.

How his idea was sparked

Why he started his own business

My type A personality was one I knew would require me to be my own boss if I wanted things done right. Trying to be perfect all the time was a curse even through school.

The pros and cons

Pro: Watching my wife and our three boys stand tall and tell their friends about how their husband/dad started his own business and see the pride in their faces when they tell them about it.

Con: Having been the ONLY night call person for 25 years. It gets tougher to drag myself out of bed at three in the
